The superstitious Gambler’s Guide

You might think that superstition is something of the past religious medieval times and that it has no place in modern day society. But the truth of social data indicates that a significant percentage of people in the western world are highly superstitious about specific events of their lives, and carry with them different ways to reassure themselves, boost confidence or focus, and even cure diseases.

This is valid for a wide range of daily life events or hobbies, and Craps at the casinos are not an exception, as you will see. When playing craps you are playing against the odds, mathematical odds, and chances are your superstition might not do it for you, but sometimes it can boost your confidence or focus and so help you making the winning bet or throwing dice just the right way. To help you a little I will show you some basic superstitious moves that are used in craps by different gamblers. For example, the more supersititous the players, the more they will think it is bad luck to use different dice on the same roll.

This is, if a shooter accidentally throws one or both dice of the table, he will probably ask for the same dice and not different ones, because he feels those different dices will screw up his luck. When it comes to you throwing, I would suggest not both dice at the same time, instead, throw one and then the other, with a small interval between them. This is not just a superstition for you, but for all the other gamblers around: pros usually throw like this, and those that don’t are regularly subject of glares by other experienced gamblers around the table.

More about the other gamblers, when playing craps, be sure not to call out “Seven!”, as it is considered one of the worst things to say, and it will probably lead everyone to flee that table. For some it can be like yelling Macbeth in the theatre, as something that is unthinkable for a gambler to speak around the craps table. Finally, if you see a penny under the table, don’t pick it. It means good luck for some gamblers and it might happen that the person who putted it there is around. So these are four basic superstitions for gamblers in the craps game that should get you started. Get focused and get superstitious.
