Toji Antique Fair
Toji Antique Fair in Kyoto, Japan
Hunt for that special souvenir or unique collectable at this extensive antique market in the Toji Temple area. You'll find antiques, collectables and curios in every price range - old silk kimonos, folk crafts, dolls, scrolls and prints, ceramics of every type and even the odd piece of wonderful old Japanese furniture. Sharp eyes may also spot Korean ceramics, Chinese coins, pottery and jades (beware of imitations).
Prices are generally very reasonable, and there are plenty of bargains to be had, especially on old silk kimono and Japanese dolls. But there are also a few big league dealers here, so don't be too shocked if the asking price for that old tea bowl turns out to be £1000 plus.
Once you've scoured the market for treasures, be sure to take a look around the temple too. The five-story pagoda is the tallest in Japan and for those interested in esoteric Buddhism the sacred images and treasure halls are a must.
The action starts around dawn and vendors start to pack up by early afternoon. Get there early for the best stuff, or at the end for the greatest bargains. Some bargaining is fine, but you'll quickly cause offence and lose the sale if you are at all rude or aggressive. A smile and a polite "best price" (ma-ke-te ku-da-sai) request usually gets good results.
Please note: the market is cancelled in the case of heavy rain.
